How can I revert back to an earlier version of messenger?

Is it possible to revert back to an earlier version of Yahoo Messenger? If so, could someone redirect me to that, I'd sure appreciate it! I like the new version but lately it has been acting up and shutting down on its own.

Uninstall 8.0 and then go to http://oldversion.com and get a older version.

I don't think you can
Uninstall the current version of Yahoo! Messenger by going to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove old programs.

This site offers older versions of messenger http://www.whiskeybentandhellbound.com/

In order to keep from getting the 8.0 update, you will need to rename the yupdater.exe file. Instructions are on this site.

http://chatauthority.com/yahoocleanfiles...
if you archive your messages you will need to back those up first as uninstalling will delete them.

your archives are encrypted and stored as .dat files in...

C:\ Program Files\ Yahoo!\ Messenger\ Profiles \username \ Archive\ Messages

but you're best bet is to back up the entire Profiles directory

C:\ Program Files\ Yahoo!\ Messenger\ Profiles

right click the Profiles folder and select copy

left click on your desktop (or where ever suits) and select paste

this will give you a full copy of your profiles and your archives

now head to Control Panel

select Add/Remove Programs

scroll down to Yahoo! Messenger and click on it's title

select Change/Remove and follow through the prompts to uninstall.

reboot your computer

now download version 7.5, it's often best to download the last release from the version range as it generally has bug fixes etc from previous releases.

v7.5.0.819 (for Windows 98 / 2000 / ME / XP) is the last from that range, released 16 June 06

and it's still available for download directly from Yahoo's servers, you can grab it from...

if you're after v7....

7.0.2.120 (for Windows 98 / 2000 / ME / XP) 23 December 05 still available for download directly from Yahoo's servers, you can grab it from...

close your browser window, disable any applications that may interfere with the install, double click on the .exe file to launch and follow the prompts through. Pay close attention if your firewall is still enabled as you will be prompted to grant access for a file in your .tmp directory, this is required to install Yahoo! Messenger so let that one through.

once your install in complete, launch yahoo messenger and log in as you usually would. watch for firewall prompts as you go, your firewall should detect that you are running a different version of yahoo messenger and seek confirmation that you want to grant it external access, agree to all .exe prompts.. i thinkt here is two.. the main .exe and also the updater exe file.. not sure though but just keep your eyes open for them :)

first thing to check, if you use archiving is that you have this enabled, from within Yahoo Messenger

click on Messenger %26gt; Preferences

select the category Archive (left hand side)

make sure Yes, save all my message is selected

hit Apply, hit OK

now all you need to do is restore your Profiles folder, so back to where you pasted it to, click on Copy, now head to...

C:\ Program Files\ Yahoo!\ Messenger\

right click inside the Messenger folder

select Paste

you will prompted re if you wish to overwrite your existing (new) profiles folder, select Yes. doing so will transfer all your old archives and profile information across for you.

log out of yahoo messenger

exit

then sign back in

check your archives etc are in full working order and watch for your firewall prompts seeing external access :)
Why go to an unknown and untrusted site (that may contain virus or spyware) for messenger downloads?

Old versions are STILL available direct from Yahoo

Try here:

http://www.wackyb.co.nz/Current_Yahoo!_M...

lists all the available versions from yahoo and download links (direct from yahoo) along with full system requirements for each that could help in picking the right version for your system.

The direct download links here will bypass the installer used by Yahoo that causes a few people problems
