Beagle over sniffing??

i have a beagle and i need some ways to redirect her urge to sniff to want to do some thing else.

she is currently in advanced training classes.. and she does great in the back yard and listens and every thing

but i just cant trust her off leash.. i take her out in the woods for about 15 once or twice a week to get some of her urge out but it just isent enough. so it would be great if you all could give me some advice what to do.. that would be great.

What you need to do is redirect her attention to you. The first thing to remember is that anytime a Beagle lowers it's head it's brains will run out it's nose. So the idea is not to worry about sniffing, because then it is to late, but instead correct the head for lowering before it sniffs.

All it takes is a strait up pop on the lead along with a "head up" command while out and about with the dog.

Unless you develop a bomb proof recall, Beagles are not the dog to be letting off lead. Their hearing becomes really selective when their nose is full.

Hide toys or treats around the house or in your yard for the dog to find.
OCD, I have a dog that licks constantly, its OCD, talk to the vet.
beagles are bred from hunter dgos, they naturally sniff a lot, they're curious like that.
Sniffing is what Beagles do. They track game using their noses. It is very hard to redirect this behavior. Use the highest stimuli you know of for her. Is it food, a favorite toy, a ball? Whatever it takes. Good luck.
Beagles are scent hounds....so what your dog is doing is totally normal.

I used to have beagles and I can't imagine trusting them to be off the leash. You probably should work with her a little bit each day w/ treats %26amp; rewards since most beagles love food....but even with a lot of training if they smell something in the woods they are mostly like to follow.....beagles are stubborn little dogs!!!
Sorry, my fat little beagles nose hits the ground the second he is out the door. He can help it its what his bread does, and he is 12 years old.
Beagles sniff, that's what they were bred for.

As a rule, they can't be trusted off leash.

I will walk my hounds off-lead in a safe area, but they have been trained practically since birth. And I still don't trust them, I keep a sharp eye out for anything that could get their attention and call them in before they notice it.

You need to find something that's more rewarding to her than sniffing.
