A bottle-nosed dolphin, "Moco," leads two stranded pygmy sperm whales (mother & calf)

and out into open water. This happened on a beach in New Zealand. Conservation workers had been working for over an hour to redirect the whales - unsuccessfully when the local, friendly dolphin came to the resuce. Isn't this one of the BEST stories you have heard in a long time? Is there anything we can learn from this event?

Yes! I was driving when I heard the account of this story from NPR. I was touched especially by the idea that the dolphin communicated with the whales, something the conservationist telling the story said he was unable to do. I hope more research will be done on the "languages" spoken by these magnificent creatures. Did the dolphin know Whalese? I wonder why this dolphin performed this act of dolphin kindness. Was it true altruism?

Consider the impact of commercial fishing, killing these amazing creatures every day. Obviously they are intelligent so is it right to continue to kill them (let alone those who consider them food)?
O my God that is the best thing I have heard in ages,
Yes!

We can learn that sometimes it's better to see the world through a bottle!

;o)

Seriously... dolphins rule! They're amazing. I swim with them a lot and it can be a painful experience because they get too excited and almost always end up by bruising you... but i know they mean well!!!

Edit: Ok, about dolphins need to help. when you're diving with them, the best thing is to make sure that we don't lock your breathing and you keep blowing those bubbles. Otherwise they'll think that you're in distress and they WILL get under you to push up. And they will KEEP you up. Your dive is over for that day. You can't sneak around them. You try do dive again, up they push you.
it just makes me all warm and fuzzy.
Wow you're very politically conscious. I think that's awesome.
This is an amazing story- I wonder how often things like this happen without our knowledge? Dolphins and animals in general are beautiful. Stories like this make you want to become vegetarian.

Interesting note: The word "Moco" in Spanish means booger. LOL
